Workshop Diary - Fashion

15th September 2014

My challenge for this lesson was to create two sleeves. One had to be designed for the high street, the other for haute couture. My favourite was the haute couture design as I could use more techniques and add more detail, I could be more myself. Whereas with the high street design I was more restricted.

As you can see the haute couture designs are much more experimental and contain many more techniques. I much preferred these designs to the simple high street designs with only one or two techniques. I am definitely more of a haute couture designer.

I chose this simple design for my high street sleeve as I liked the simplicity of the sleeve but the added detail with the smocking on the cuff. The gathered head creates a sleeve worn in everyday life yet the small bit of smocking on the cuff adds detail and originality to a garment.

The final design was a success however the smocking wasn't shown that well as it was on a small scale. If I was to create the sleeve full size the smocking would look much better however it would take a very long time to do.

I chose this design for my haute couture sleeve as I didn't have much time left. It only contains one technique but as it is repeated a few times it adds a better effect. The puffed sleeve and ruffled cuff comes from 18th century designs and would be very detailed and take a long time to make full size.

I used the puffed sleeve and then the ruffling effect to add detail to the sleeve and make it eye catching.

The end result was a half success. The ruffling looked good however the sleeve wasn't as puffed as I wanted it to be. Next time I will make the pattern more spaced out to make a larger puff on the sleeve. I may also add more ruffles to make it more detailed.

The images I took research from are shown below. The first image inspired the smocking as they are both diamond shapes the difference is that the research had the diamonds pointing out whereas the smocking on my sleeves made the diamonds point in. The second image inspired the more pointed ruffles on some of my designs. The third obviously inspired the large layers of ruffling and pleating on the haute couture designs and also a few of the small ruffles on the high street designs. Finally the last image shows some simple flared sleeves which inspired a few high street designs.

This week the techniques used that would be used in future jobs were a little designing, sewing which could lead to be a machinist, pattern cutting and checking the final piece to make sure everything lines up could lead to be a garment technologist.
